Willow ptarmigan. Willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) standing amongst plants. Willow ptarmigans are inhabitants of woods, moors and tundra throughout northern Eurasia and northern North America. They eat berries, leaves and buds and also some insects. The willow ptarmigan is protected from the cold by a thick layer of insulating feathers. In winter, their plumage turns white to provide camouflage amongst the snow, just as this mottled brown plumage hides them against shrubs at other times. They live in large flocks after the breeding season, and are a favourite game bird. Photographed in Denali National Park,Alaska,USA | |
