Young red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) at their nest on the back of a statue of an eagle,a relative of theirs. This bird of prey inhabits open country throughout North and Central America and the Caribbean islands. It forms a monogamous relationship,and the female lays between one and three eggs,which are incubated by both parents for around a month. The young take six to seven weeks to fledge. It has a varied diet,and will take mammals,birds,reptiles and large insects. It can attain a length of nearly 50 centimetres,and the female is larger than the male.
