Snail kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis) perched on a leaf. This bird of prey inhabits reed beds and vegetation around lakes and rivers in South and southern North America. As its name suggests, its main prey is snails, specifically the apple snail (Pomacea sp.). It finds these by slowly flying low over water, and when it finds a snail it swoops down and picks it from beneath the water with one claw. It seems to dislike getting wet despite its specialised diet, and tries to keep as much of its body and plumage as dry as possible. If snails are unavailable,it may take small turtles or other animals. Photographed at Lake Kissimmee,Florida,USA | |
