Red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) soaring. This bird of prey inhabits open country throughout North and Central America and the Caribbean islands. It soars high in the air on thermals (rising currents of warm air),looking for prey with its keen eyesight. It has a varied diet,and will take mammals,birds,reptiles and large insects. It can attain a length of nearly 50 centimetres,and the female is larger than the male. This is a young hawk. Adults are highly territorial,and defend their boundaries with display flights.
