Peregrine falcon. Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) taking off from a rock. This falcon hunts by flying high above its victim, usually another bird in flight. It dives, striking the victim in passing with its feet. The falcon then catches the falling bird and carries it away. During the dive it is thought to reach speeds of up to 400 kilometres an hour, making it one of the fastest animals on Earth. The peregrine falcon is found throughout the world, breeding in all continents except Antarctica. Photographed in Colorado,USA | |
