Mallard with ducklings
Female mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) with her ducklings. The female mallard lays between six and fifteen eggs,which she incubates for around a month. The young take up to two months to fledge. In this time they follow their mother around,staying close to her at all times. The male stays with the mother until she is incubating her eggs,but plays no part in the rearing of the ducklings. The mallard is found near water throughout the northern hemisphere,and has adapted well to life in urban areas. It feeds on aquatic plants,and also take insects and other small invertebrates. It can reach a length of up to 60 centimetres. Photographed in Washington State,USA
