Mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) upended in the water looking for food. This is a male (drake) mallard. The mallard is an opportunistic bird that inhabits wetlands throughout the northern hemisphere. It has adapted well to urban life, and is found on water in cities and towns as well as in the country. It feeds by dabbling (swimming with its bill running through the water) or by upending itself (as here). It mainly feeds on insects, worms, leaves and seeds. The mallard may reach a length of almost 60 centimetres. Photographed in the north-western USA in May | |
