Great blue heron (Ardea herodias) wading in a coastal estuary. This bird inhabits lakes,rivers and marshes throughout North and Central America,with northern populations migrating south for the winter. It is equally at home in both freshwater and seawater. It feeds on a wide variety of prey,including fish,frogs,insects and small mammals and birds. It can reach a length of up to 130 centimetres,with a wingspan of almost two metres.
