Black-browed albatrosses (Diomedea melanophris) at their nest. This seabird forms long-term monogamous pair bonds. Pairs nest in colonies, and couples are highly territorial, defending their nest site against other albatrosses. Pairs produce one chick, which is cared for by both parents. It inhabits the southern ocean, spending much of its time at sea. It is one of the smaller albatrosses, with a wingspan of around two metres. It soars over the open ocean in search of food, swooping down to take krill, squid and small fish. Photographed on South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic Ocean | |
