Wagler's pit viper (Tropidolaemus, formerly Trimersus, wagleri) scenting the air with its tongue. This snake has a broad triangular head with a pit organ in front of each eye. The pit organs function in detecting heat given off by prey, which may be small mammals or birds. This venomous snake measures between 60 and 100 centimetres in length. Its vivid green colouration camouflages it against leaves in its tropical rainforest habitat in south-east Asia. The Wagler's pit viper is also called the temple viper | |
