Gaboon viper. West African Gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica rhinoceros) camouflaged amongst dead leaves. Its cryptic colouration helps to hide it from both its prey and its predators. This snake inhabits the moist forests of western Africa. Its bite may be fatal to humans, and its potent venom is cardiotoxic and an anticoagulant. It hunts by lying in wait for any small animal to come close enough for a strike. It has the longest fangs of any snake, and holds its prey until it dies. It may reach over two metres in length. It is however a fairly placid snake, and bites to humans are rare and only ever defensive | |
