Leopard tortoise. Close-up of a leopard tortoise (Geochelone pardalis babcocki). This subspecies of leopard tortoise is found in grassland and scrub in southern and eastern Africa. The leopard tortoise is known to migrate for long distances in order to find the grasses that form the majority of its diet. During the hot dry summer season, these reptiles enter a state of dormancy called aestivation. Their patterned shells provide them with camouflage amongst foliage, protecting them from predators.
