Reticulate eye monkey frog (Phyllomedusa tarsius). Monkey frogs are tree frogs. They have the suction pad toes of all tree frogs, allowing them to grip in their arboreal habitat. Monkey frogs are named for their behaviour of climbing around trees and very rarely jumping. They also have the protruding eyes of a tree frog. These are moveable, and press down to help it swallow its food of insects and other small animals. Tree frog skin secretions are poisonous and, like all frogs, their skin must be kept moist to allow them to breathe through their skin. This tree frog is found in the western parts of the Amazon Basin of South America. Photographed near the Napo River,Ecuador | |
