Short-head seahorse (Hippocampus breviceps). This fish inhabits the tropical waters off southwestern Australia. This is a pregnant male seahorse. The female deposits fertilised eggs into a brood pouch (swollen,lower centre) on the male. The eggs develop in the pouch and,once hatched,the live young swim out. This seahorse is camouflaged to hide itself amongst weeds. It feeds on zooplankton and can reach a length of 15 centimetres | |
