Tiger grouper (Mycteroperca tigris) in front of a sea fan (branched, pink). This fish is an ambush predator, lying in wait for smaller fish before gulping them into its mouth in a rapid strike. It is found in the tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea. It is thought to be protogynous, meaning that all fish are born as females, but some turn male when they reach a certain age. This means that the largest fish are all male. Adult males may reach a length of over a metre. A sea fan is a coral-like colony of tiny organisms | |
