Sunfish. Two adult sunfish (Mola mola) swimming near a floating raft of kelp seaweed. Sunfish have large, flat bodies and possess a long fin above and below the body,as seen here. Tropical sunfish are very large; they reach up to 3 metres in length and can weigh 360 kilograms. Because of their shape these oceanic fish are weak swimmers and often drift on their sides. The purpose of this behaviour is unknown but may conserve energy. Sunfish are frequently seen basking in the sun at the water's surface. Photographed off the south Californian coast,USA | |
