Manta rays (Manta birostris) silhouetted against the surface of the water. These large fish are found in the tropical and coastal temperate regions of the world's oceans. They have large pectoral "wings",which they use to propel themselves through the water. They also have a short,whip-like tail which, unlike many other rays, lacks a sharp barb. Manta rays are filter- feeders, feeding on plankton and small fish which are filtered through special plates in the mouth. They are normally solitary and can be seen at depths of up to 120 metres.
