Popeyed squid. Popeyed,or Caribbean reef, squid (Sepioteuthis sepioidea). This squid inhabits the coral reefs in the warm western Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Like all squid,it can change its colour and pattern rapidly, which is used to confuse predators and communicate with other squid. This squid is thought to use around 40 different patterns. It usually lives in shoals of 10-30 individuals. Such shoals are mainly active at night, when they search the reefs for shrimps and small fish, their main prey. When attacked, this squid squirts a cloud of ink into the water and moves away rapidly using water jet propulsion. Photographed in the Caribbean Sea | |
