This horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) is stranded on the beach. The halo of marks in the sand surrounding the crab betrays its efforts to right itself. Every year, about 10% of the horseshoe crab's breeding population dies when rough surf flips the creatures onto their backs and they cannot right themselves. The Ecological Resource and Development Group (ERDG) has launched a ''Just Flip 'Em'' campaign encouraging beachgoers to turn the crabs over. This one was photographed on Reeds Beach in New Jersey | |
