View of a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) yawning. The Bengal tiger lives in India, mainly in the forests. Although generally solitary, tigers tolerate each others presence at kills or water holes, and may even form groups of a male, female and cubs. Tigers mainly eat large mammals such as deer, wild boar, antelope and buffalo, and in exceptional circumstances they may even attack rhinoceroses and elephants. Tigers live in huge territories covering hundreds of square kilometers, which they mark with urine and scent. They are the largest of the cat family, and an adult may weigh 300 kilograms and reach almost three meters in length. Photo taken at the Philadelphia Zoo,Pennsylvania | |
