Rat flea. Light micrograph of the head of a rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis). It belongs to the order known as Siphonaptera, which comprises about 1400 species of wingless,blood-sucking insects. They are parasitic on mammals and are characterised by a mouthpart of the piercing-sucking type. The rat flea is a common parasite of rats in tropical and sub-tropical regions. It has a leading role in the spread of epidemics of bubonic plague (caused by the bacterium Pasteurella pestis) and murine typhus (caused by the microorganism known as Rickettsia mooseri) | |
