Tersa sphinx moth caterpillar (Xylophanes tersa) feeding on the starflower plant (Penta sp.). The front of the caterpillar has a pair of false eyes (eyespots). The true head is small and green, below and in front of the eyespots (lower centre). Eyespots are devices of mimicry and serve as an intimidation display to frighten away predators by making the caterpillar appear to have a large head. Photographed in Texas,USA | |
