Clipper butterfly (Parthenos sylvia) resting on a leaf. This tropical butterfly is native to the forests of south-east Asia and the Australasian islands. It has a habit of resting,or feeding on flower nectar,open-winged for long periods of time. The name 'clipper' alludes to the white wing patches found on the forewings, which look like the billowing sails on trade ships. The clipper butterfly protects itself against predators by flying erractically, making it difficult to attack or catch the butterfly unless it stops to feed or rest.
