Clearwing moth (family Sesiidae) that closely resembles a wasp. As the name implies, its wings are devoid of scales. The moth's yellow and black stripes mimic a wasp's colouring. The moth may buzz during flight and is diurnal (active during the day). This type of mimicry is known as Batesian mimicry and occurs when an organism gains protection from predators by resembling a harmful organism. In this case,by mimicking a wasp the moth tricks its predators into believing it is able to deliver a sting. Photographed in Ecuador | |
