Striped inchworm. Caterpillar of the family Geometridae (inchworms or measuring worms) walking along a leaf. The inchworm has three pairs of true legs at the front of its body and two or three pairs of prolegs (larval abdominal appendages) at its rear end, with no appendages in its middle portion. It moves with a characteristic looping gait,as it has to loop the rear portion of its body to meet the front parts. With around 4,000 species, the Geometridae is one of the largest families of the butterflies and moths. Photographed in Ecuador | |
