Io moth. Female io moth (Automeris io) resting on a leaf. The large black eyespots on the hindwings are flashed by the moth when it is threatened to startle predators. This display also draws the attacker's attention away from vulnerable parts of the moth's head. The moth's colouration is designed to make it inconspicuous amongst dead leaves on the forest floor. This moth lives mainly in the tropical parts of Central and South America. It has no mouthparts and cannot eat,its only function being to breed. Male io moths are a much lighter yellow colour.
