Green tree ants (Oecophylla smaragdina) repairing a tree nest. Some ants are making the repairs, while others defend the nest from intruders, such as the jumping spider. The nest is formed out of leaves woven together using silk thread produced by the ant larvae. The nest is made from the leaves of the tree it is constructed in and as a result is often well camouflaged and hard to see. The green tree ant, also known as the weaver ant,is found in northern Australia. Photographed in Cape Tribulation, northern Queensland,Australia | |
