Paper wasps (Polistes sp.) constructing a nest. A nest is made from wood fibre mixed with saliva and consists of a single exposed comb suspended by a narrow stalk ('umbrella shaped'). A nest can contain up to 100 cells and it is in these cells that the wasp larvae develop. The adult wasps feed on nectar but catch agricultural pests, such as caterpillars,to feed the larvae. They are therefore considered to be agriculturally beneficial. Photographed in New Jersey,USA | |
