Honey bees. Macrophotograph of a queen honey bee (centre left, black thorax) and workers (Apis mellifera). Most honey bees are workers which construct, maintain and defend the nest, take care of the larvae and gather food. Bees eat pollen, nectar and honey. The workers produce honey,a rich sugar solution used to feed the young,by converting ingested nectar in special gut sacs. Each nest has one egg-laying queen. Whether the female eggs develop into infertile workers or new queens depends on the food they are fed. Honey bees are found throughout the world and are kept by humans for their honey.
