Skimmer dragonfly. Adult skimmer dragonfly (Libellula sp.) resting with its wings outstretched on a plant stem. This family of dragonflies (Libellulae) contains the largest number of dragonfly species. As predators, adult dragonflies are excellent fliers and feed and reproduce on the wing. "Skimmers" are so called for their behaviour of skimming repeatedly across the water of ponds. Both pairs of wings beat in time unlike in damselflies. The large compound eyes of dragonflies (black, upper centre),and the mobility of their head, provides them with a wide field of vision | |
