Shield-backed bug (Callidea signata) specimen. The last section of the shield-backed bug's thorax is enlarged and forms a continuous shield over the wings. Most species of the shield-backed bug,or jewel bug, have bright metallic colouring in a variety of patterns depending on the species. The shield-backed bug has sucking mouthparts, which it uses to feed on plants. It is closely related to the stink bug and both discharge a foul-smelling fluid to discourage predators when disturbed. The shield-backed bug is found in the Philippines | |
