Northern red anemone (Urticina felina). This sea anemone, also known as a dahlia,is found in cool northern waters. It lives attached to a rock or other hard surface, feeding on small fish and crustaceans which it paralyses with its venomous tentacles. The prey is then pushed through the mouth (upper centre) into the digestive cavity. Waste is also expelled through the mouth. Photographed in the Gulf of Maine,USA | |
