Cryptosporidium. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing two stages in the life-cycle of the parasitic sporozoan (protozoan) Cryptosporidium parvum. Rounded oocysts are seen, which contain the infective sporozoite stage (some seen at top left). This parasite causes severe diarrhoea in humans,a condition otherwise known as crypto- sporidiosis. It can be spread from person to person or from domestic animals to people. The main symptom is an attack of watery diarrhoea lasting about a week; fever, nausea and abdominal pain may occur. The infection is more severe in immune suppressed patients, and is common in AIDS patients. Magnification: x4,000 at 7x8 inch size | |
