A large overhead crane in operation above a waste pit at the RESCO refuse-to-energy plant in Bridgeport,Connecticut. The plant receives 2,500 tons of rubbish each day, delivered by truck & dumped in the pit. Two overhead cranes transfer the waste from the pits to the feed hoppers of three high-temperature furnaces, where combustion temperatures exceed 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Each furnace consumes 750 tons of rubbish each day. Steam raised drives a turbine coupled to a hydrogen-cooled generator that produces 67 megawatts of electricity for the surrounding Fairfield County | |
