Jet engine manufacture. A titanium impeller for a jet engine,with its styrene mould pattern (green) above. The mould pattern is made of plastic,and is produced by a computer-aided design (CAD) system. This 'hard copy' of the design may then be measured and tested. If satisfactory,the pattern is then used to make the mould in which the titanium component for the real engine is cast.
