An American container ship, the President Grant,at sea off the US coast. Many of the standard- sized freight containers may be seen on the ship's deck. The use of containers has radically improved the distribution of mixed freight cargoes. Each container holds a specific consignment of goods. When the ship docks at a suitable port facility, the containers may be easily removed from the ship and placed directly onto trucks or railway carriages. The containers may also be easily stored for customs clearance purposes. Each container has its own identifying mark, and may be locked ('bonded') by customs officials | |
