Laser spectrum. Spectrum of light from a liquid dye laser, revealing the different components in its beam. The term "laser" is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Simulated Emission of Radiation. Dye lasers contain a glass cavity holding a solution of dye. Energy is pumped into this chamber and the excited dye molecules are stimulated to release their energy as light. There are many dyes which can be used, each producing a different range of coloured light. Photograph of the spectrum of an experimental,high-intensity laser at Columbia University,USA | |
