Electric battery. Rechargeable alkaline battery used to power small, electric equipment. The battery holds an electric cell containing a plate of nickel oxide and a plate of cadmium or iron metal, both immersed in an ion-carrying electrolyte of potassium hydroxide. The metal plate acts as a negative electrode, breaking up into electrons & positive ions. The electrons can be used to provide an electric current whilst ions react with the electrolyte. When electrons arrive at the positive nickel oxide plate they cause another reaction. The battery runs down as the plates and electrolyte react but it can be recharged by applying an electric current | |
