Radon monitor. Equipment for monitoring the radioactive gas radon in the home. The monitor collects a sample of air and is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Radon gas is produced by the radioactive decay of radium. The presence of radon is widespread because radium is itself a decay product of uranium which occurs in many rocks. Radon dissipates quickly in the open air,but when trapped inside a building, the gas can accumulate in concentrations hundreds of times higher than out of doors. The radioactive decay products of radon have been shown to contribute to lung cancer. The threat from radon can be countered by improved building ventilation | |
