Glen Canyon Dam,USA,aerial photograph. This dam lies on the Colorado River,on the Arizona-Utah border, forming a reservoir (off bottom,Lake Powell). It is a concrete thick arch dam, designed to transfer the load of the water behind it onto the walls of the canyon. The dimensions are: 475 metres (crest length) and 216 metres (structural height). As well as controlling water flow,it is also used to generate electrical power (equipment seen in front of dam and at upper right). Access roads,a bridge, and the surrounding desert, are also seen. The dam was built from 1957-1964,and is one of the largest concrete dams in the world | |
