Hyades star cluster. This open star cluster (also known as Melotte 25) is found in the constellation of Taurus. It contains several orange stars that form a distinctive V-shape. The V-shape runs from the brightest star Aldebaran (upper right) towards centre left and down to lower right. These are the brightest stars (though Aldebaran is actually a foreground star and not part of the cluster),but there are more than 200 stars. The Hyades is the closest open star cluster,150 light years away, and is 790 million years old. Open (or galactic) clusters are groups of stars thought to form from the same nebula (cloud of gas and dust). The stars will eventually drift apart | |
