Flame Nebula (NGC 2024,red) bisected by a dark nebula. The star at lower right is Alnitak (Zeta Orionis) in the constellation of Orion. The Flame Nebula is an emission nebula. Nebulae are clouds of gas and dust in space, many light years across. They are called emission nebulae when the hydrogen gas is ionised, emitting red light, and are called dark nebulae when they fail to emit or reflect light. Nebulae contain the materials to form new stars and planets. Image taken with a Meade 16- inch telescope | |
