Emission nebulae. These are the North America Nebula (NGC 7000,upper left) and Pelican Nebula (IC 5067-70,centre). These nebulae are found in the constellation of Cygnus. Nebulae are clouds of gas and dust in space, many light years across. They are called emission nebulae when the hydrogen gas is ionised, emitting red light. The hydrogen gas is ionised by nearby stars. The bright star at upper right is Deneb (Alpha Cygni). Nebulae contain the materials to form new stars and planets | |
