Cocoon Nebula (red, centre left,Sh2-125). This is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. It lies at the end of a long dark nebula (B168) that stretches across to far right. The dark nebula is seen as a dark shape obscuring the stars. Nebulae are clouds of gas and dust in space, many light years across. They are called emission nebulae when the hydrogen gas is ionised, emitting red light, and are called dark nebulae when they fail to emit or reflect light. The hydrogen gas of the Cocoon Nebula is ionised by a nearby star cluster (IC 5146). Nebulae contain the materials to form new stars and planets | |
