Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237-2239 and NGC 2246). This collection of emission nebulae surrounds the open star cluster NGC 2244 (centre). These have formed from the material at the centre of the nebulosity, and their radiation is now creating the central space seen here. A nebula is a cloud of gas and dust in space, many light years across. It is called an emission nebula when the hydrogen gas is ionised, emitting red light. The hydrogen gas is being ionised by the central stars. The Rosette Nebula is over 130 light years across, and is 5500 light years away in the constellation Monoceros | |
