Scorpius. Artwork of the zodiacal constellation Scorpius, representing a scorpion. The zodiac is the band in the sky through which the Sun appears to move. The Sun is in Scorpius roughly between the 24 October and 21 November each year. This is a Summer constellation for Northern Hemisphere observers, and is noteworthy for Antares, the bright central star of the three in the body. The claws of the scorpion used to be represented by the stars of the neighbouring constellation Libra (not seen) but the Romans split the old constellation up into the two accepted today. The Milky Way is dense in Scorpius, with many clusters and nebulae visible. North is at top | |
