Total solar eclipse. Sun's corona (atmosphere, white streaks) revealed as the Moon (dark circle) blocks the light from the Sun's visible surface (photosphere). This only happens during a total solar eclipse when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun,and is possible due to the ratio of the sizes/distances of the Sun and Moon making them appear the same size. When the Moon distance is greater than normal,an annular (ring-shaped) eclipse occurs and the corona is not seen. The corona is a low density cloud of plasma (hot ions),formed into these patterns by the effect of the Sun's magnetic field. The corona constantly loses mass in the form of the solar wind | |
