Female human chromosome set. Coloured image of a complete set (karyotype) of healthy female human chromosomes. Humans have 46 chromosomes in most cells, consisting of 23 pairs made up of one from each parent. Chromosomes contain deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA),which encodes genetic information (in sections called genes) that is passed from parents to their offspring. The double XX chromosome pair indicates that the subject is female. The banding seen on the chromosomes,in this case obtained by G-banding staining, helps to identify them. The 7 groups (A-G) range from large to small chromosomes and also reflect chromosome symmetry | |
