| Colonic glands. Light micrograph of the wall (mucosa) of the colon,showing the openings of numerous tubular glands or Crypts of Lieberkuhn. These closely packed glands (green) consist of tall,columnar epithelial cells in a flower-like arrangement. The central depression or Crypt of Lieberkuhn gives these glands depth. Colonic glands function to produce faeces by absorbing water,vitamins and electrolytes from the undigestable residue of food that passes from the small intestine into the colon. Apart from their absorptive function,some epithelial cells (Goblet cells,not clearly visible) secrete a lubricating mucous. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size | |
