The horseshoe shaped structure surrounded by black is the smallest bone in the body,called the Stapes. This is one of the bones which conducts sound coming in from the external ear to the inner ear. The rounded grey structure with spiral turns is the cochlea. Lower in the image is a semi-circular canal involved with balance. The black areas represent air. Multiple small holes in the bone filled with grey represent mastoid air cells which are infected (mastoiditis) | |
